Many days it’s just too exhausting or painful to walk down to the lunch room/break room. Let’s say you make it to work (because you’re one of the ones that can still work and not one of the many who are too ill to hold down full time employment). There’s a sadness and loneliness that comes with chronic illnesses like lupus and fibromyalgia. And on Wednesday we wear pink (no wait - that’s “Mean Girls” - but I digress) Advertisement If you’re one of the ones who is still well enough to be able to hold down a job you make your way there, wishing you had the “sick time” to take off but knowing that one cold that turns into bronchitis then pneumonia can mean a week in the hospital then at least a month or two home recovering so you can’t stay home just because every fiber of your being hurts and you feel like you haven’t slept for a week. You can feel super nauseated but you have to eat something because there is that handful of pills waiting for you to ingest and you’ll only feel worse (or get really sick) if you don’t take them. Zippers, buttons, necklaces, bracelets - forget it if your fine motor coordination isn’t working. Just the feeling of the fabric touching skin can be so painful that it limits what you can and can’t wear. Putting on clothing can be a two-person job - that’s if you can get out of bed. You are too tired and sore to even shower, yet can’t stand the fact that you aren’t clean. When you live with chronic illnesses like fibromyalgia and lupus there are many, many days where this is a perfect sentence to describe your feelings.

The reveal was not surprising (I actually called it very early in the book) and the reason wasn’t entirely organic to the plot, but neither of these flaws kept the chase from being a fun ride. (And Agent Poop is on the case.) I’m not a big fan of the mystery genre for any age, so I’m not the intended audience, but I felt the formula was implemented well. Seriously, the climax of this novel makes that fair scene from Problem Child 2 as sweet as cotton candy.īelly Up is a classic whodunit story told in a zoo. There are still bits of humor from beginning to end, but they’re mixed in with a larger story that focuses on murder, attempted murder, and some all-out grossness. The story becomes increasingly darker as it goes on. That first chapter sets the stage for what ends up being a very different book. I think I could argue that poop is actually the protagonist of this novel. Poo continues to make appearances throughout the novel, but it’s in this first chapter than poo really makes its grand entrance. There’s a mischievous kid in a zoo, dodging the adults who want to put an end to his fun. It’s still great fun, but fun in the what’s-gonna-happen-next way, not in the oh-look-monkies! kind of way.Ĭhapter 1 of Belly Up met my expectations. Sure it has a dead hippo on the cover, but the cartoonish of it, plus the colors. So once I had those two things together, the identity and representation pieces, that was really the driving force behind Tokyo Ever After. I wished with my whole heart to see myself in the books that I loved, in books like The Princess Diaries. And in reflecting on my adolescence, I also remembered not being able to find books that featured Japanese American protagonists, or books that were even written by Japanese Americans. It started more with me being interested in writing a story about a Japanese American, like myself, who is searching for her identity, a place where she belongs, which is something I struggled with as an adolescent. It’s so funny, because that wasn’t where the story started. Can you talk about your inspiration behind this duology? Your book is being compared to The Princess Diaries and Crazy Rich Asians. There was the one about some poor kid that was with the wise men and had no gift so he gave his heart. I remember sitting there staring at it and thinking back to other books and testimonies I had heard. I cannot remember the specifics, but I think it was something about Jesus being a true friend to me when I am lonely, so I will stay with him forever. Well in one of these books I got to the last page and it was a conversion moment of sorts. If my memory serves me correctly, I think they heavily featured weeping willows and kids feeling lonely or angry or hurt somehow. They were illustrated in very pastel colors and always seemed a little sad somehow. Back in those days there was also a series of books for kids that I think I read at home but also in the bookstore. My Grandpa was and is an avid evangelist, the bookstore was full of christian books, my Dad was a pastor, and I was generally surrounded on all sides by stories of faith and conversions. When I was a little girl my Dad’s office was in the back room of Crossroads Bookstore, which was run by my Grandpa. |
